What are the Portsmouth Papers?
The Portsmouth Papers offer rich, accessible research into the city’s history — created for the local community and anyone curious about Portsmouth’s heritage. Each booklet is designed to appeal to a broad audience, combining original research with vivid illustrations and a strong focus on social and cultural history.
Since the series began in 1967, it has explored a wide range of topics including religion, the dockyard, tourism, architecture, transport, and conflict. With over 80 titles published by 2025 — some reprinted and others expanded into second editions — the Portsmouth Papers remain a popular and trusted source of historical insight.
Portsmouth Papers is a joint endeavour between Portsmouth City Council and University of Portsmouth.
Within the Council, the work sits within the Culture and Regeneration portfolio. The officers involved work within the Culture and Leisure directorate.
At the University of Portsmouth, the work sits within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Faculty Research and Innovation Committee (FRIC) also convene to discuss the university’s research objectives, working alongside relevant research centres such as the Centre for Port Cities and Maritime Cultures.
The editorial advisory panel for the Portsmouth Papers is constituted by the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council and third parties.
